Eligibility
Am I Eligible?
You likely qualify if:
- You lost your job or had your hours reduced through no fault of your own — this means layoffs, business closures, or being let go without misconduct.
- You earned enough during your base period — you must have earned at least $3,400 in your highest-paid quarter and total earnings of at least 1.5 times that quarter.
- You’re able to work, available for work, and actively looking for work every week you claim benefits.
- You’re legally authorized to work in the U.S., and you can prove it with documents like your Social Security card or work visa.
Job Search Requirements Explained
New York requires that you perform and log 3 job search activities per week, completed on different days.
These count as job search activities:
- Applying online or in-person to jobs
- Registering with JobZone.ny.gov
- Networking events, workshops, and career fairs
- Attending job interviews
- Contacting employers directly
- Using Career Center resources
New York has “priority” and “secondary” activities. You must have at least one priority activity weekly

What You’ll Need
- Social Security number, driver’s license or state ID
- Employer names and addresses from your last jobs
- First and last dates you worked, hours, and wages
- Reason for leaving
When to Apply
Apply as soon as you stop working — don’t wait. The faster you file, the sooner your benefits kick in.
About the Waiting Week: New York imposes a mandatory one-week waiting period. You must certify but won’t receive payment for the first week.
After Applying
- You’ll get confirmation via mail or email
- Expect payments to begin in 2-3 weeks, assuming no issues
- You’ll need to certify every two weeks, reporting job searches and any income

Between $136–$504, depending on your earnings over the base period
(Note: Maximum increases to $869 in October 2025)
Duration
Up to 26 weeks, with extensions during high unemployment periods
Partial Work?
You can work up to 30 hours per week and still receive partial benefits
Important Reminders:
- Benefits are calculated by dividing highest quarter earnings by 26 (or 25 if under $3,575)
- Continue weekly job search activities. (3 per week minimum)
- Certify on time through NYSDOL’s system
- Report any part-time, freelance, or gig work — failure to do so may delay or disqualify your benefits
