Eligibility
Am I Eligible?
You likely qualify if:
- You lost your job or had your hours reduced through no fault of your own — this means layoffs, business closures, or being let go without misconduct.
- You earned enough during your base period — you must have earned at least $1,600 total in your base period (first 4 of last 5 quarters), with at least $440 earned outside your highest-earning quarter.
- You worked in at least 2 quarters — you need wages reported in at least two different quarters during your base period.
- You’re able to work, available for work, and actively looking for work every week you claim benefits.
- You’re legally authorized to work in the U.S., and you can prove it with documents like your Social Security card or work visa.
Job Search Requirements Explained
Illinois requires that you perform and log work search activities every week, with registration through IllinoisJobLink.com being mandatory. The state provides a Work Search Record form that allows up to 5 job searches per week to be documented.
These count as job search activities:
- Applying online or in-person to jobs (minimum 2 applications per week recommended)
- Registering with IllinoisJobLink.com (mandatory)
- Attending job fairs and career workshops
- Networking events and informational interviews
- Contacting employers directly
- Using Career Center resources and meeting with advisors
By the way: GigHQ auto-logs all your job applications and follow-ups for you. You can export this dashboard anytime as proof — no manual logging required.

Duration
Up to 26 weeks, with potential extensions during high unemployment periods

Partial Work?
You can work part-time and still receive benefits if your gross wages are less than your weekly benefit amount. Illinois allows you to earn up to 50% of your weekly benefit amount before any deductions are made. For example, if your weekly benefit is $400, you can earn up to $200 without affecting your benefits.
Additional Benefits for Dependents:
- Non-working spouse: Additional 9% of your average weekly wage
- Dependent child: Additional 17.3% of your average weekly wage
- Maximum possible benefit with dependents: Up to $790 per week
- Note: You can only claim either a spouse OR children as dependents, not both
Important Reminders:
- Must certify every two weeks on your assigned day — missing certification can delay payments
- Complete minimum 2 work search activities per week (IDES form allows up to 5)
- Report ANY income from part-time, freelance, or gig work immediately
- Register with IllinoisJobLink.com within first week of filing
- Unlike other states, Illinois doesn’t specify exact salary percentage requirements for “suitable work,” but generally expect to accept jobs paying 80-90% of previous wage initially
- Keep detailed records of all job search activities — IDES may audit your work search efforts
- Failure to report work or provide false information can result in fraud charges with penalties up to 15% of overpaid benefits
