Eligibility
Am I Eligible?
You likely qualify if:
- You lost your job or had your hours reduced through no fault of your own — this means layoffs, business closures, or being let go without misconduct.
- You earned at least $14,700 in your base period, OR at least $2,450 in one quarter with total wages of 1.5× that amount in your base period.
- You’re able to work, available for work, and actively looking for work every week you claim benefits.
- You’re legally authorized to work in the U.S. and can provide required documentation.
Rhode Island May Deny Benefits If You:
- Quit without good work-related cause or were fired for proved misconduct connected to your work
- Refuse suitable job offers without valid reason or fail to complete required work search activities
- Don’t register with RI Department of Labor and Training or attend required reemployment sessions
- Are receiving severance pay, holiday pay, or pension payments that affect eligibility
Job Search Requirements Explained
Rhode Island requires that you complete at least 3 work search activities each week. You must keep detailed logs and may be audited at any time.
These count as job search activities:
- Applying for full-time jobs for which you are reasonably qualified
- Attending job interviews (in person, phone, or online)
- Participating in EmployRI.org job search activities
- Using BacktoworkRI.com Virtual Career Center services
- Attending virtual job fairs, workshops, or networking events
Important: Keep work search documentation for at least one year – your claim may be randomly audited and you’ll need to provide verification.
Temporary Furlough Exception: If you have a definite return-to-work date within 12 weeks, work search requirements may be waived.
By the way: GigHQ auto-logs all your job applications and follow-ups for you. You can export this dashboard anytime as proof — no manual logging required.
