Massachusetts May Deny Benefits If You:
- Quit without good cause related to the job or were fired for deliberate misconduct
- Refuse suitable job offers or fail to complete required work search activities
- Don’t attend scheduled MassHire Career Center appointments
- Are receiving workers’ compensation or are unable to work due to illness/injury
- Provide false information on your application
Job Search Requirements Explained
Massachusetts requires that you complete at least 3 work search activities per week starting May 6, 2025. You must record these activities when requesting weekly benefits.
These count as job search activities:
- Submitting applications, resumes, or letters of interest through employers or employment websites like MassHire JobQuest
- Making in-person visits with employers who may have openings
- Attending MassHire Career Center job fairs, networking events, or workshops
- Interviewing with potential employers (in person, phone, or online)
- Registering with private employment agencies or placement services

What You’ll Need
- Social Security number, birth date, home address, email, phone number
- Employment history from last 15 months (employer names, addresses, phone numbers, dates worked)
- Bank information for direct deposit (or you’ll receive a Bank of America debit card)
- If non-U.S. citizen: Alien Registration Number
- If military veteran: DD-214 Member 4 form
- If former federal employee: SF8 form
When to Apply
Apply as soon as you lose your job or have hours significantly reduced. Note: If laid off at week’s end but paid for full week, wait until following week to file.
Processing Time: Most claims processed within 3-4 weeks.
After Applying
- You’ll receive monetary determination showing benefit amount and eligibility
- May receive non-monetary determinations on other eligibility issues
- Must start requesting weekly benefits the week after filing your initial claim
- Identity verification may be required at USPS location or by document submission

Approximately 50% of your average weekly wage, with minimum of $45 and maximum of $1,051 per week (as of October 2024)
Duration
Up to 30 weeks when unemployment rate exceeds 5.1% in metro areas (currently extended through April 20, 2025 benefit year), otherwise 26 weeks
Partial Work?
You can work part-time while receiving benefits. Earnings greater than 1/3 of your weekly benefit amount will be deducted from your weekly payment.

- File weekly certifications even if your claim is under review
- Report all earnings from any work performed
- Keep work search records for one year in case of audit 10-day appeal deadline for any negative determinations
