Complete Unemployment Guide

California Unemployment Benefits
As of 2025, 1 in 20 Californians are unemployed. You’re not alone.
This guide cuts through the noise and explains exactly who qualifies, how to apply, and what you’re entitled to – without legal mumbo-jumbo.
***Disclaimer: We are an independent platform and not affiliated with any government unemployment agency. Please consult official sources for applications and eligibility.
Eligibility
Am I Eligible?
You may qualify if you meet all below:
- You lost your job or had hours cut through no fault of your own
- You earned enough in your base period (usually first 4 of last 5 quarters)
- You’re physically able, available, and actively seeking work weekly
- You’re legally authorized to work in the U.S.
California also uses “alternate base periods” if you don’t meet the standard one.
If you quit or were fired, EDD may contact you for more information. Your employer must prove “misconduct” while firing, or you must show a good reason if you quit.
If you’re in training through CTB, approval can extend benefits and relax work search rules.
Pro tip: GigHQ auto-logs your job search activity and lets you export proof—so you won’t lose benefits if you are audited by the Employment Development Department (EDD).
Job Search Requirements Explained
California requires that you perform at least 3 job search activities per week, though this may vary by claim.
These count as job search activities:
- Job applications, calls, interviews
- Resumes uploaded to CalJOBS
- Training, workshops, and career events
- Attending job fairs
- Contacting employers directly
Say Yes when certifying that you’re actively searching or risk “Pending” certification
By the way: GigHQ auto-logs all your job applications and follow-ups for you. You can export this dashboard anytime as proof — no manual logging required.
