Complete Unemployment Guide

Pennsylvania Unemployment Benefits
1 in 25 Pennsylvanians is currently unemployed – you’re not alone.
This guide cuts through the noise and explains exactly who qualifies, how to apply, and what you’re entitled to – without legal mumbo-jumbo.

Eligibility
Am I Eligible?
You likely qualify if:
- You lost your job or had your hours reduced through no fault of your own — this means layoffs, business closures, or being let go without misconduct.
- You earned enough during your base period — you must have earned at least $1,688 in your highest-paid quarter and at least 37% of total wages outside that quarter.
- You worked at least 18 credit weeks — earning $116 or more per week for at least 18 weeks during your base period.
- You’re able to work, available for work, and actively looking for work every week you claim benefits.
- You’re legally authorized to work in the U.S., and you can prove it with documents like your Social Security card or work visa.

Claiming Your Benefits

Benefit Breakdown
What Benefits Will I Get?

Duration
Between 18–26 weeks, depending on your work history and credit weeks earned

Partial Work?
Pennsylvania disregards $21 or 30% of your weekly benefit amount (whichever is greater) when you work part-time. If you work part-time, you only need 1 job application that week (no work search activity required).
Important Reminders:
- File weekly claims on time — late filing can delay payments
- Complete 2 job applications + 1 work search activity weekly (starting week 3)
- Report ANY income from work immediately
- Keep work search records for 2 years — PA can audit at any time
- Search for jobs within 45-minute commute paying comparable wages initially
- Failure to meet work search requirements can result in benefit denial and repayment demands
For more information, refer to the Pennsylvania UC Handbook.
