Can ChatGPT Track Your Job Applications?
Not on Its Own, but with GigHQ, Yes
https://mcp.gighq.ai/mcp), and ChatGPT can list your recent applications, log new ones, update their status, flag ones that have gone quiet, and summarize your week. Full tracking (reading and updating) works on ChatGPT Plus, Business and Enterprise/Edu; on Pro it's read-only. Setup is on ChatGPT on the web.

What ChatGPT can and can't do on its own
While ChatGPT provides strong text generation, it lacks a dedicated database for tracking interview dates, recruiters, and stage milestones:
| Feature / Capability | ChatGPT alone | ChatGPT + GigHQ |
|---|---|---|
| Remembers which jobs you applied to | Only within chat memory (unstructured) | Yes, stored in your GigHQ tracker |
| Status and stage history | Only what you paste in | Saved per application in live CRM |
| Flags applications with no updates | No | Yes (check_stale_applications) |
| Weekly summary of your pipeline | Only from pasted data | Yes (weekly_job_search_summary) |
Prompting alone gets you good writing help, but not a live record. Here's why prompting alone isn't enough.
How it works: ChatGPT + GigHQ over MCP
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use tools and live data from external services (modelcontextprotocol.io). The official GigHQ MCP server gives ChatGPT tools to read and update your own GigHQ tracker directly within your chat session.
You sign in on GigHQ with OAuth 2.0 PKCE, so your GigHQ password is never shared with ChatGPT, and you can disconnect anytime in GigHQ Account Settings.
How to connect GigHQ to ChatGPT
What you need
- Supported ChatGPT Plan: A plan that allows custom MCP servers (Plus, Business, Enterprise/Edu; Pro for read-only). On Business, workspace admins/owners can add one; on Enterprise/Edu, admins or members with granted permissions.
- A free GigHQ account: Sign up for free at app.gighq.ai.
- ChatGPT on the web: OpenAI supports custom MCP servers on the web client.
1-Click Install: Official GigHQ ChatGPT Plugin
Skip manual URL configuration. Install the official GigHQ plugin directly into your ChatGPT workspace.
Step 1 — Open Plugins or Install Directly
Install via the official plugin page, or in ChatGPT on the web go to Plugins, select the + button, and choose Add custom MCP server.
Step 2 — Add the GigHQ server URL
Enter a name (for example, "GigHQ"). Under Connection, paste the official endpoint:
https://mcp.gighq.ai/mcp
Step 3 — Sign in to GigHQ and authorize
Choose OAuth for authentication, review the risk warning, tick I understand and want to continue, then select Create as a plugin. Sign in to GigHQ when asked and approve access.
Step 4 — Test it
Install the plugin, start a new chat, type @, pick GigHQ, and ask: "Show my recent applications from GigHQ."
On a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin may need to publish the plugin before team members can use it.

Troubleshooting
GigHQ tools don't appear in the chat
Type @ and select GigHQ for that message. OpenAI applies app selection per message, so @mention it again when you need fresh data.
Sign-in fails or expires
Disconnect and reconnect GigHQ in your Plugins manager, then complete the OAuth sign-in flow again.
There's no option to add a custom MCP server
Check your plan and role. Custom MCP servers are for Business, Enterprise/Edu (and Pro, read-only) on the web. On a workspace, ask an admin or owner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about tracking your job applications in ChatGPT with GigHQ.
It isn't a structured tracker. While ChatGPT has conversation memory, it cannot reliably query, update, or calculate pipeline statistics across separate sessions. Connecting GigHQ gives it a live record it can read and update.
Yes. Custom MCP server connectors work on ChatGPT Plus, Business, and Enterprise/Edu (with full read and write tracking), and on Pro (read-only). Custom MCP servers are not currently supported on ChatGPT Free.
Not mobile: OpenAI says custom MCP servers are web only. In desktop apps, MCP connector support is governed by web configuration.
No. You sign in on GigHQ with OAuth 2.0; ChatGPT gets a token, not your password. Data you ask about is included in the conversation and handled under OpenAI's privacy policy.
On Plus, Business and Enterprise/Edu it can add and update. On Pro it can only read.
Remove the plugin in ChatGPT Plugins, or disconnect active sessions in GigHQ Account Settings.
The GigHQ MCP server is available to all GigHQ users at no additional cost. Your ChatGPT plan is separate.
